All of us want to rank high in the search engine results pages (SERPS) for big keyword phrases. However, REALTORS will limit their keyword reach to a handful of obvious phrases, i.e. “Los Angeles Real Estate, Minneapolis homes” etc. Why rank for only a handful of keyword phrases when you can rank for hundreds or thousands of terms that people will really use to find your site?
My own Minneapolis real estate site at http://RealEstateTwinCities.NET ranks at or near the top of page one of Google for a large number of major real estate keywords, i.e:
- Minneapolis MN homes
- Minneapolis MN real estate
- Twin Cities townhomes
- Twin Cities real estate
- Minnesota lakeshore foreclosures
- Minnesota mansions/Minnesota mansions for sale
- Minneapolis lake homes
- Minnesota luxury homes
- MN gated communities/gated communities in MN, etc.
- Hennepin County lake homes/Hennepin County lake shore, and similar results for about two dozen Minnesota lake-filled counties.
These are some major real estate keywords and are also the most obvious ones. Of course it would be easy for me to find a few keywords that the site ranks for and then show them to you. Lots of people can do that. Instead, I thought it would be more meaningful to show you a list of a few keyword phrases that visitors have actually been using in the Google search engine to find the site. These keyword phrases get my site on page one of Google and most frequently at the top. .Here is a small sample of the literally thousands of keywords, according to Mint that actually drive traffic to the site:

Thanks for posting this info. I’ve been using google adwords keyword tool and I was choosing not to use many of these types of keywords due to their lack of monthly search numbers. I guess that when used properly a real estate website can rank higher in these terms and in turn cause a better click through rate. Thanks I now know based on your data that I need to redo some things.

Wow this is instructive. That is a long list of search terms that people are using to get to your site – one of the benefits of all your content I suppose. Maybe we obsess too much with the ‘main’ key word phrases.
There is just simply no question in my mind that wordpress is the way to go if you want a great real estate website. With the right theme you get clean code and wonderful tools to build into your site. And I just can’t say enough about how happy I am with the fact that I can change my content without having to rely on web developer to do it for me. WordPress is king.

It doesn't matter if the word is a stop word or not to me because all of the phrases listed were actually used verbatim by visitors to find my site.

Do you find that all of these rankings are brining in more customers? I mean, I look at them and see a lot of obscure or long tail words. Just curios why you're not also targeting other "Minneapolis" home or real estate terms?

Either you are missing the point completely, or you didn’t read the post very closely. Or, perhaps I didn’t clarify things well in the post. I did just add some links to the post that might be helpful.
If you look at the first part of the article, you will see some major keywords that I rank for, and am deliberately targeting, i.e. Minnesota lakeshore foreclosures, Minneapolis MN homes, etc.
I am also targeting “MN homes” which is a term that receives 823,000 searches in Google per month. According to statistics, if I reach number one for that term, I will get 40% of the clicks on that page. Right now I am in position number four and have been moving up. I am already getting traffic for that term.
Regarding the “obscure” terms, aka the long tail… I am not even targeting most of those words, but according to Mint, these are terms that people are actually using to find the site.
According to Mint, about half of my traffic comes from the major search terms, and the other half comes from the long tail stuff.. If your site is not getting any traffic from the long tail, you are missing a lot of action.
We get a ton of long tail traffic. You always get a better conversion rate on long tail visitors as well. Its a win-win.
Great tip for someone who's a newbie in keywords. The options are indeed limitless. It gives me an idea on how to promote my own site as well.
Great post! It's critical to rank for keywords that buyers and sellers are using in your local real estate market. Google has a great keyword tool you can use to discover the keywords in your local market.. Including how competitive they are and how many times/month they are searched.
I find this very interesting because there aren't really any heavily searched terms related to Fruitland Idaho homes! I need the longtail and I need to rank for as many search terms as possible.
