Submit your site to these places….

January 28, 2008

Directory submission is one way to get backlinks to your site, although frequently the links are of dubious quality. Google favors sites that have quality backlinks. The quality and amount of link juice you get from these directories is hit-and-miss. Here are some quality sites that have excellent page rank:

Avoid directories that require some sort of reciprocal link, or some sort of logo that they want you to install on the front page of your site. Also avoid them if they have a low Google page rank. Avoid any sort of “link exchange” scheme, especially with other real estate agents.

If the listings in the directory have a “nofollow” attribute, they are not worthwhile.

Paid directories abound, but many are of questionable value. Directories that are able to rank well themselves and get crawled frequently are generally the better ones. Look for directories that don’t have a lot of garbage links, high ad ratios, or a lot of broken links. Also directories that offer direct links to your site will give you more benefit.

Make sure that the pages in the directories linking to your site have at minimum Google PR value of 1.

Here are three paid sites that may be worthwhile. . All of these are reputable, and have good Google page rank.

  • You can appear in the Yahoo! directory for $39/year. Google does place some value on this directory.
  • For $25/year, you can get a “basic” link at International Real Estate Directory or you can spend more on “premium links.” The basic link might be worthwhile.
  • Another trusted directory is www.Business.Com. Cost is probably about $200/year.

Please be aware that many of the high quality directories use an editorial review process, and it may take a while for your site listing to appear.

Directories that accept submissions automatically without human review should be avoided. If the listings in the directory have a “nofollow” attribute, they are not worthwhile. To see if they are “nofollow,” right-click a link you see in a listing entry. Choose “properties.” If it is “nofollow,” you will see “nofollow” for the relative value in the box that appears. Nofollow means that Google will not follow the link to your site.

Also, avoid purchasing any automated submission software or submission services. These are scams, and in many cases can hurt your site.

Here are a few social bookmarking sites that let you build a profile that includes a link to your site.

Comment Strategy*

1.First, go to Firefox and download the SEO for Firefox and activate it so all “nofollow” links on any page will be highlighted in red.

2. Now, go to Google and type in “keywordluv” + “real estate” (or whatever is relevant) to your business. You will find blogs that allow you to leave keywords in the name field when you comment on the blog. You will enter the name something like this:

Kermit@Minneapolis Homes

In this case, “Minneapolis Homes” will appear as the anchor text when your comment is published.

You may want to vary the anchor texts that you use from time to time.

If the site is dofollow, you will have a link back to your site. If the other commenters names are highlighted in red, you know that the links are nofollow, which means you might be wasting your time.
Look for relevant blogs with higher PR rating, and avoid porn, gambling, etc or lousy sites.

Important! Leave only meaningful comments on other blogs. Also, only submit your home page url. If you try to “deep-link” you could trip the spam filter. Don’t put urls in the comment field.

If you put a keywordluv plugin on your own site, you will probably get more comments on your own blog. However, you might attract some serious spammers.

Don’t do to much of this at one time. Google is suspicious if you gain a large number of links very quickly.  It does not look natural!
